Chequerfield
Rangers were formed in 1988 when The Chequerfield Hotel saw the
arrival of new landlord & landlady Steve McManus & Jill
Frost. Steve, a great Rugby League enthusiast and ex-pro with
Wigan, Leeds & Doncaster formed the side comprising of ex
Pontefract Labour Club players and new talent from the area. Pete
Bridges was appointed to coach the new club.
Placed in Division 3 of the Sunday West Yorkshire A.R.L in season
88/89 they emerged as undefeated champions earning a promotion
straight to Division 1 the following season. A dispute at the
club left the Rangers without a coach for the forcoming season.
Ex Wakefield player Alan Shaw was duely appointed. Chequerfield
repeated the excellent performance and again became Division Champions
losing only one league game all season - their final game against
Wrenthorpe (Doncaster). Revenge was to be sweet when they beat
Wrenthorpe in the top four play off final. Chequerfield successfully
applied to play in the Yorkshire A.R.L. in season 90/91, placed
in division 2. Successfull cup runs lead to Chequerfield having
to play 6 games in 15 days at the end of this first season the
climax being at Belle Isle (Leeds). Victory would bring Chequerfield's
3rd consecutive title. A highly thrilling match ended in a 10-11
victory for Chequerfield. The season was completed when they beat
Houghton (Castleford) in the top 4 play off final. Chequerfield's
success continued seeing them promoted to the Senior Division
in '92 and ultimately to the Premier Division in '93. In 95/96
Chequerfield were to experience their worst season to date.
With relegation looming coach Alan Shaw, who was responsible
for taking them from West Yorkshire Division 3 to Yorkshire League
Premier Division in consecutive years decided to step down and
hand the reins to then assistant coach Spike Hughes. Chequerfield
were inevitably relegated to the Senior Division at the seasons
end, but with an incredible act to follow Spike was to prove to
be equal to the task in season 96/97 - Chequerfield's darkest
season was to be followed by their finest!
In 1998 Chequerfield joined the newly formed White Rose League
which comprised of twelve teams - 8 top teams from the Humberside
league and 4 from the Yorkhsire League Premier Division. In thier
first season Chequerfield didn't emerge too well finishing near
the bottom of the table. But with some new signings they did a
lot better in season 99/2000 finishing in the top half of the
table.
After a couple of seasons in the White Rose League, travellling
to Hull every other week was taking its toll on the squad. With
numbers dwindling and morale in the camp running low, Calvin decided
it was time to call it a day. Adverts were placed in the local
press for a new coach and local lad Neil Roebuck ex of Bradford,
Featherstone and Castleford was given the role. It was decided
that Chequerfield would return to the Yorkshire league and were
placed in Division 2. Neil's presence brought a new buzz to the
club, he also encouraged the up & coming talent from the youth
teams and gave them a chance to prove themselves in the senior
squad. This was to prove very successful and the Rangers once
again became champions with a couple of games in hand. To add
to the success they went onto win the top 4 play offs, the Cas
& Fev District Open Cup and were just pipped by Moorends in
a very closely fought White Rose Cup final. Promooted to Division
1, Chequerfield started the 2002/03 season very strongly winning
all of thegames in the first half of the season. A couple of points
dropped in drawn matches were to prove costly and the Rangers
eventually finished in third position on points difference. Neil's
succes has really boosted the club as a whole and for season 2003/04
the Rangers will boast 2 senior teams.
